Menstrual complaints
Menstrual complaints
Menstrual complaints sometimes seem to be a taboo, there is hardly any talk about it.
Many girls and women think that menstrual complaints are part of it. But this is incorrect, a menstruation should not cause physical and/or emotional complaints.
Acupuncture can reduce the symptoms of your menstrual cycle.
The menstrual cycle
A healthy menstrual cycle is regular and lasts about 28 days, of which about 5/6 days are blood loss. There are no physical or emotional complaints with a healthy cycle.
Many girls and women have shorter or much longer cycles. An irregular cycle is also common. Some girls and women have very little blood loss, while others have a lot of blood loss.
The hormone changes before and during menstruation can cause physical and emotional complaints.
Common complaints are: abdominal pain, fatigue, headache (migraine), joint pain, pain in the (lower) back, breast tenderness, but also irritability, mood swings and a gloomy feeling.
Many of these complaints fall under the well-known PMS, Premenstrual Syndrome.
Acupuncture and menstrual complaints
Acupuncture helps with menstrual complaints. Acupuncture works on the inner energy balance, which reduces menstrual complaints.
This is also shown by research:
A systematic review compared a total of 19 studies to determine the effect of acupuncture and herbs. Both treatment methods resulted in a reduction of premenstrual complaints of 50% or more. This study found that acupuncture is significantly more effective than a placebo.

It is important to rule out a medical cause, it is best to consult your own doctor first. Sometimes menstrual symptoms are caused by endometriosis, a fibroid or a cyst. It’s important to rule this out. Often no reason is found and then acupuncture is a good option to reduce the complaints.
