Menopause is a natural stage in life and part of the ageing process. It is a period where we say goodbye to the fertile phase of life. The hormones have to get a new balance.
This was a special period in ancient China. At this stage of life, the woman transformed into an elderly lady, with wrinkles and a lot of wisdom. This gave them a higher status in the village.

Complaints during the menopause

On average, women are 45-55 years old when they enter the menopause. We speak of menopause when the woman has not had a menstrual period for 1 year.
Complaints that often occur during the menopause are: night sweats, hot flushes, mood swings, fatigue, headache, joint pains, weight gain, decreased libido and palpitations.

What can acupuncture do for menopausal symptoms?

Acupuncture mainly focuses on restoring the energy balance, which in many cases reduces the severity and frequency of the complaints.
On average, after 4/5 treatments you can determine whether acupuncture has the desired effect, and how many treatments are needed to go trough menopause in a pleasant way.

What can you do to reduce the symptoms of menopause?

  • It is important to reduce stress in the period of the transition, but it is even better to reduce stress in the years before. Stress costs your body a lot of energy it’s better to use that energy for restoring your new hormone balance (which can cause the symptoms of the menopause). Best is a regular lifestyle, with a good balance between work, relaxation and eating at regular times.
  • Diet can also play a role in aggravating symptoms. For example, (an excess of) cow’s milk products, such as milk, yogurt, etc., can lead to more hot flushes and mental unrest. As a general advice, I recommend cooking daily with fresh, seasonal vegetables. It is also advisable to reduce coffee & alcohol, these are energetically very hot and can lead to more hot flushes.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking is also energetically very hot and for that reason causes more menopausal complaints such as hot flushes.

Did you know?

In the classical texts of Chinese Medicine, the following is written about the menopause: When a woman is 7 x 7 years old, her menstruation stops. She can now use the energy that is no longer used for menstruation for herself.
This is an important text that is often forgotten when women are going through menopause. It is a transition to a new phase of life. The children are a bit older, or even left home, the care is less, you have gained a lot of life experience and in the field of work the biggest steps in career have often already been achieved. It’s a great time to think about what YOU want!
